CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Over the next few weeks Julia and Natasha kept in contact. They would go to the pictures together, have lunch, dinner. Julia found she was beginning to spend less time with Rebecca and more with Natasha. She was angry with Rebecca, but was thoroughly enjoying Natasha’s company.
At Rebecca’s one night Julia was surprised when she asked her to invite Natasha to her 30th birthday party, it was a small gathering at her house.
“Come on Julia I’d really like to meet her, I’m interested in what she did, and she’s your friend. Please for me.”
Julia was confused. “You had the chance to meet her, I invited you to the award ceremony.”
“Jules, we wouldn’t have had time to talk, and I didn’t want to create any problems in relation to access. Please....for me.”
Julia smiled. “Well how could I refuse that face?” She knew that it wasn’t always easy for Rebecca to get out much to meet new people. She remembered Rebecca’s comments about Natasha’s looks and hoped she wouldn’t notice her increasing physical attraction to her.
Natasha was surprised but glad to be invited. She had heard so much about Rebecca and had started to read her blog. Rebecca came over as witty, sharp and funny. “I’d like to meet Rebecca, that’s if you are okay with that?”
“Why shouldn’t I be?”
They arrived together and when they knocked on the door Natasha was dumbstruck when Maggi answered it.
“Maggi, Hi, I didn’t know you knew Julia?”
Maggi kissed her on both cheeks, then hugged Julia. “Yes, Rebecca is my daughter.”
Natasha was surprised, although at the back of her mind she remembered hearing that Maggi had a daughter who had been in an accident. Maggi kept her work and private life separate though so Natasha had heard nothing more.
Julia looked from one to the other. “You know each other?”
Maggi smiled. “Yes, through her voluntary work.” Maggi wasn’t aware of how much information Natasha had shared with Julia. It wasn’t her job to do so, though some of her background was now in the public domain through the media attention. She had been incredibly annoyed when she had seen the media coverage about Erin, and then impressed by Erin’s interview.
Julia looked at Natasha. “Yes Natasha had said she does a little voluntary work.”
Maggi raised her eyebrows. “A little, don’t believe everything you hear Julia, Natasha is a great asset to the organisation and her agreement to lead on the campaign is fantastic.”
Natasha blushed, clearly embarrassed. “Well I might as well capitalise on my sudden fame, or notoriety.”
As the day progressed Maggi watched Natasha with Julia. Rebecca had been right, she could see the mutual attraction, she hadn’t seen Julia so comfortable with anyone since Rebecca. She stood with Rebecca looking at Julia and Natasha, they were sitting on the couch across the room talking animatedly. “So is your plan working?
Rebecca feigned innocence. “What plan?”
“Come on Becca I can read you like a book. The fact that you insisted I have that conversation before Julia saw Natasha again says it all.
